Julia Fiona Roberts' parents are Walter Grady Roberts and Betty Lou Bredemus. Her grandfather, her great-grandfather John Pendleton Roberts, a farmer who was also the first Roberts to move to Atlanta. Her father's passion for theatre was inherited by her. in the theatre at a young age. He acted on the Emory University campus in 1952 and also in a variety of productions in Atlanta. Following his air force service, in 1953 he appeared in an airforce production in Biloxi with Betty Lou Bredemus. Eric Anthony was their first born. The couple got married in 1957. Walter along with his wife were discharged from the military in 1957 after which they began enrolment with Walter at Tulane University. Walter began working for Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio in 1960. Walter as well as Betty Lou financed their own production of the local Sunday morning children's show, Bum Bum and His Buddies. Later that year they founded the Actors and Writers Workshop which operated for a period of six years. They were joined by Lelisa Billingsley (also called Lisa) as well as Julia (also known as Julie) at the time.
